BWIPP x The Edge: A New Partnership

THE EDGE PARTNER WITH BWIPP IN ORDER TO BROADEN THEIR ACCESS TO TALENT

Leading film production company, The Edge Picture Company, is shifting the needle in the right direction.

Led by Head of Post Production, Lorenzo Culora and Senior Producer Sophia White, Black Women In Post Production (BWIPP) is now one of The Edge’s go-to resources when hiring freelancers and full time staff.

Founded by Jasmin John, a freelance Film and TV editor, BWIPP’s ethos is rooted in the desire to increase representation and amplify the value of Black women.

“When I first started out in the industry, I was immediately conscious of being the only Black woman in the cutting rooms. As the years have gone on and I’ve progressed throughout my career, little has changed. I didn’t have a community of Black women I could turn to for advice and support on how to navigate the industry or to share my experiences so I built that community with BWIPP.” says BWIPP founder & CEO Jasmin John.

BWIPP offers employers, recruiters and production companies the opportunity to tap into the network directly via their internal jobs board for a fee or via the BWIPP diary service and talent database. Jasmin says: “We really want to proactively change the existing hiring processes – word of mouth, networks and nepotism – to diversify the post production workforce and this is an incredible step in the right direction. I hope other companies will follow suit!”

In addition to offering a community network, BWIPP also hosts networking events, industry masterclasses and will soon be launching a mentoring programme, online training and outreach programmes.

Kim French, founder of Edit Girls: “A few weeks back I went to the Black Women In Post Production (BWIPP) Christmas drinks and it was just the loveliest, most refreshing night. Jasmin John has created the most amazing community and to be in a room filled with editors (ambitious, Black, female editors no less!) is literally one of my favourite things. I believe wholeheartedly that communities like BWIPP are the forces behind real industry change so I urge you to follow and support them!”

Emily Fielden, Head of Talent (Unscripted) at Studio Lambert: “[The event] was brilliant and I found it quite inspiring. Next year will be the 30th year I’ve worked in TV. The change I felt in the room last night has been a long time coming, but thank god it’s coming!”
